A-League Women: Perth Glory goalkeeper Casey Dumont a chance to make debut against Canberra United

There could be a goalkeeper battle brewing in Perth Glory’s A-League Women’s side, with ex-Matilda Casey Dumont a chance to be thrown straight into the fray this weekend. The three-time Matilda, who won the league’s best goalkeeper gong in 2022, has jetted into Perth following the completion of Hawthorn’s AFLW season. Dumont, who has been part of the Hawks’ squad for the past two seasons, missed the Glory’s first three games of the season as Hawthorn reached the AFLW semifinals. Miranda Templeman has started in lieu of Dumont, but Perth coach Stephen Peters revealed the former Melbourne Victory shot-stopper was in contention to play against Canberra United on Sunday. “She’ll be here this week. It’s massive plus for us, whether she’s in that position to play the match and to start the match, Casey and I will discuss that, and we’ll go from there,” Peters said. While Dumont is no guarantee to start, Perth could receive a further boost with Onyinyechi Zogg in line for increased minutes in the heart of defence, and Welsh recruit Megan Wynne a chance to debut after hurting her wrist in pre-season. “She (Wynne) trained, she looked good, she’s in good spirits,” Peters said. “We’ve had a good opportunity to not only have the surgery on the wrist, but to look after her knee — she’s got a bit of a bit of a chronic knee tendinopathy there.” Peters said attacker Kelli Brown was continuing to battle an ankle complaint originally suffered in their 3-2 win over Newcastle. “There’s an injury cloud over Kelli with the ankle from the Jets game, she played through that (against Brisbane),” he said. “She’s quite a warrior, she doesn’t really take to being told ‘no’ too much, so we’re working with that, and then we’ll do what’s best for her and for what’s best for the team come this Sunday.” After Perth were comfortably beaten 3-0 by Brisbane last week, Peters said he wanted his team to play with more confidence in possession against Canberra, who will be spearheaded by Matildas striker Michelle Heyman up front. “Friday’s game was the highest possession we’ve had out of the three games so far, so that is a positive from the game,” he said. “We did start to look at controlling the ball a little bit more, whether that’s because Brisbane were sitting off, or whether that’s because we genuinely had more control, that’s something we’ve probably got to look more into. “Michelle’s a massive name in the league, she’s obviously a huge threat for them, so we have to obviously be mindful of that, but they’re very unified team. “They’ve defended as a unit for the three games they’ve played, and they had back-to-back wins to start the season. “They probably wouldn’t have liked their performance last week, so we have to be very wary of what we’re coming up against on Sunday.”
