Nick Hobson has warned the competition not to discard the threat of New Zealand international Finn Allen after a few low scores to start his maiden Big Bash campaign.

Hobson was the star of the Scorchers’ Boxing Day victory over reigning champions Brisbane, bashing an unbeaten 47 off 16, including a match-turning 24 off the final over, on an Optus Stadium deck that troubled everyone.

On the other hand, Allen recorded his second-straight duck against the Heat, taking his average to 2.50 from four innings opening the batting.

“Finn will be fine; he’s played a lot of cricket,” Hobson said.

“It’s so, so hard to be consistent in T20 cricket and by the end of the tournament, he could be our leading run-scorer.

“That’s the nature of it, and he’s world-class. He’s a match-winner and strikes at such a high strike rate. He’s got our absolute backing.”

Hobson himself was a whirlwind of chaos as he turned the game on its head.

Perth were heading towards a well-below-par total after being asked to bat first as Australian international Xavier Bartlett was tossed the ball for the last over.

But Hobson was well prepared, having spent stints this season honing his power-hitting playing T10 cricket in Abu Dhabi as well as T20 tournaments in Zimbabwe and as far-reaching as the Cayman Islands.

“It’s something I’ve kind of chipped away at for a few years, and this year, I was lucky enough to play a few T10 and T20 tournaments, which gave me a little platform coming into the BBL,” he said.

“T10 puts you under a lot of pressure, so it’s something I’ve been trying to work on a lot, and I got a bit of an opportunity to show it.

“I had Zimbabwe, Cayman Islands and Abu Dhabi.

“It can be quite surprising to people where you can play cricket these days, but at the end of the day, there are some really high-quality players in those leagues.”

Hobson added the team’s blueprint worked perfectly against Brisbane and he hoped they could bottle the performance for their road clash in Adelaide on New Year’s Eve.

“In T20 cricket, it can be hard to be consistent, and I think, probably, the blueprint of how we want to play cricket tonight in terms of the partnerships towards the back end is something we can stay consistent with in Adelaide,” he said.
