Former West Coast forward Isiah Winder closing in on third crack at AFL after earning draft combine invite

Isiah Winder is closing in on a third crack at the AFL after the former West Coast forward received a late invite to the state draft combine to be held next week. Winder, 22, has received enough interest from clubs to get a shot at the testing ahead of November’s drafts alongside some of the state’s most talented youngsters. It comes on the back of a strong season for South Fremantle, where he averaged 26 disposals, four clearances and five score involvements as well as kicking 16 goals in 18 games predominantly playing as a midfielder. Winder played seven games for the Eagles after being selected with pick No.57 in the 2020 draft from Peel Thunder. The forward would play one game in his debut season and another six in 2022, before he was delisted at the end of that season. Winder was handed a lifeline on the Eagles’ rookie list, but couldn’t crack another AFL game amid injuries and form, playing six games for their WAFL side before again being axed. He then moved to South Fremantle this year where he has impressed Bulldogs officials and drew interest from several AFL clubs throughout the season including Richmond, Essendon and Brisbane. The Tigers have a history of recruiting mature-age players from the Bulldogs having taken chances on Marlion Pickett and Matt Parker during in the mid-season rookie draft. South Fremantle football boss Charlie Burke said Winder was ready for a third crack at the AFL. “His leadership and competitiveness have been exceptional for us and I know it’s only a matter of time before he gets another crack at the AFL,” he said. “He has focused on a career off the field through the Stephen Michael Foundation which has allowed him something off field wich is really meaningful. “From the first day we made contact with Isiah to join us it’s been about getting him back on a list as we know that will only make us better. “The club has a great record of players getting picked up as mature age recruits and as much as I would hate not having him running around I know Isiah would love another crack and we always want to see our players getting an opportunity at the highest level. “If he doesn’t get picked up this year I know he is driven to keep working and if the opportunity comes about down the track that’s great but he is also setting himself up off field if footy doesn’t work out.” In an exclusive interview with The West Australian earlier this year Winder said his goal was to get back on an AFL list. “The past 12 months have taught me that I obviously need to do some work on myself and I’m doing that, I’m trying to become better,” he said. “I want to get back on a list, that is the goal and I’m doing what I can to make that happen. “(But) having work to keep my mind at peace so it doesn’t drive me crazy is a big part of that.”
