Rising creative Heritier Kasanda debuts ‘Asunder’ exhibition

The Rockingham Arts Centre has welcomed the work of emerging Perth creative Heritier Kasanda at his debut solo exhibition titled “Asunder”.

The inspiration behind the exhibition is loss and this is conveyed through photography, poetry and cinematography.

Kasanda said the exhibition “encapsulates and endeavors to share stories of loss through its seemingly turbulent yet quiet nature”.

“The main inspiration was losing, not just people but feelings, relationships as well as discipline of self,” he said.

Kasanda said it was a “blessing” and a great opportunity to have his work viewed by “strangers” because they will say “exactly what they think”.

“The word asunder means to tear apart and I heard the word a few years back when I lost someone very dear to me ... it felt heavy like thunder bearing down,” he said.

“In a way Asunder is my way of attempting to venture out into the storm poetically.”

Kasanda said when he produced Asunder he felt it would display “anger” and “grief”, but a sense of empathy was a common theme discussed by viewers.

“The feeling of asunder never fades, however it connects us and make us human and vulnerable,” he said.

The Asunder exhibition is open until January 29 at the Rockingham Arts Centre.
