Beat the Heat: Kununurra library’s cool activities for kids this wet season
It may be the sweaty season of mango madness but Kununurra School and Community Library has organised a sanctuary of cool, quiet activities to get families through these school holidays.
Librarian Cesarina Fitzgerald has pulled out the library’s large Lego collection and extensive family movie catalogue to create fun and free weekly activities.
“These school holidays at the library, we have calm, quiet activities for families to enjoy during the hottest, most humid, sticky part of summer,” Ms Fitzgerald said.
Each Tuesday from 2-4pm a family movie will be picked by popular vote to watch.
“The movies will all be family friendly, either G or PG-rated, and they will be selected by a vote on the day by the participants, out of the selection of three or four appropriate movies,” she said.
“We’ll also serve popcorn at the movie session as a little snack for participants.”
On Thursdays between 2pm and 4pm it will be time to tip the Lego out and have a crack at some of the fun challenges on offer.
“I have scoured the internet for ideas and selected about 12 prompts that I thought would be really fun,” Ms Fitzgerald said.
“They range from creating your whole name in Lego pieces to building a boat. We’ve even got a challenge where you have to create your own Lego lunch.
“One of my favourites is build a maze that fits a marble but what has been the most popular in previous sessions is building something while blindfolded.”
During the Lego sessions, veggie platters will be served.
Ms Fitzgerald said the library continues to be a popular destination for families and young people during school holidays in the wet season and everyone was welcome.
“When it’s super sticky and people want to pay less for their air-conditioning, we might see quite a lot of people and because we are one of the last free public services in the community I find it difficult to put a cap on numbers for things, because I don’t want to turn people away. If people can fit, they’ll fit.
No bookings are required, however parents and carers of children under seven must stay to supervise.
