Bunbury Hospital Muslim community group to host community dinner to celebrate and educate about Ramadan

The Bunbury Hospital Muslim community group is hosting a community dinner to educate the community on the significance of Ramadan. The dinner will be hosted at the Bunbury Regional Hospital on March 10 with invites open to both Muslim and non-Muslim staff. Event co-coordinator Walid Elsayed said the group was expecting a big event, with between 150 and 200 people attending in the previous two years. Ramadan begins on the evening of February 27 and continues for 30 days with Muslims who are well enough fasting between dawn and sunset. Mr Elsayed said the importance of the event was to give back and celebrate Muslim culture with his work community. “In Christmas, they (the hospital staff) invited us to get together and share their festival and celebration together, and we need to pay that back,” he said. “Most people don’t know much about Muslims and what they do in Ramadan. They know Ramadan, but they don’t know what time we fast and pray and what time we eat, so it’s a very good time for us to share this. “There will be time for prayer, and time for a small celebration and then dinner includes different types of foods. We will have Egyptian cuisine, Indian cuisine, Arabic cuisine, vegetarian, sweets. “We’ve seen people were very happy and were encouraging us in the hospital to do it again.”
