Tough road for Swans women as Geraldton hockey finals approach; Rovers top men’s division
Swans are still fighting for points in the final rounds of the Geraldton women’s hockey season, after they drew with third-placed Australs in A-grade over the weekend.
Just two points separate Swans from a top-four finish, but they have a mountain to climb, with league leaders Cardinals their opponents on Saturday in the last round.
Cardinals and second-placed Murchison are assured of finals action, and so are Australs, who are 15 points back and unable to catch either of the top two, but secure in third.
Emily-Jayne Warr scored for for Swans on Saturday as the match ended 1-1. Teagan Mundy scored for Australs.
Cardinals and Murchison drew 2-2 on Friday. Dayna Cooper and Matilda Fitzgerald scored Cardinals’ goals and Kate Fariss and Darcie Newman got Murchison’s.
In the men’s A-grade, Rovers beat Murchison 3-1 on Friday to stay a point clear at the top of the table.
James Van Niftrick scored two and Warrick Sullivan slotted the third. Aaron Hewitt scored for Murchison.
Casuals beat third-placed Australs 2-0 on Saturday, as Lachlan Camerer and Ned Osborn struck.
Top side Yacht Club Development team beat fifth-placed Yacht Club 5-0 on Saturday in women’s A-reserves.
Second-placed Saints beat seventh-placed Murchison 2-0 in the other game on Saturday.
Third-placed Australs and sixth-placed Vets drew 2-2 on Friday.
Fourth-placed Cardinals beat Swans 5-0 on Thursday. Swans are in eighth.
