Glen Eli Mippy: 27yo man sentenced after spending 355 days in custody and missing birth of child in April

A man who spent almost a year remanded in custody was sentenced on Monday after he assaulted a person, stole from a caravan in Meekatharra and smashed house items in front of his children. Glen Eli Mippy, 27, appeared in Geraldton Magistrates Court by video link from Greenough Regional Prison for sentencing on Monday after he committed a spate of crimes late in 2021. He is being sentenced on charges of criminal damage, common assault, no authority to drive, exceeding zero blood alcohol, possessing a prohibited drug, stealing, trespass, breach of bail and person who breaches a conditional release order. Mippy spent a total of 355 days in custody until he was handed a 10-month backdated prison sentence, making him eligible for parole. On October 30, 2021, Mippy went to a home on Sutherland Court to visit his children when he became aggravated, picking up a glass Christmas tree ornament and smashing it on the ground. The court heard he pushed the children’s mother, his former partner, causing her to fall onto a table and shattering it. He also kicked down a door after she locked herself away. At about 10pm on November 26, 2021, Mippy was on Sutherland Court in Spalding with two co-offenders when he approached a man and squared up to him in a fighting stance, striking the victim in the face three times. When the victim hit back in self-defence, a family member got involved and hit the victim. On November 30, 2021, Mippy was driving a Mitsubishi Challenger along Abraham Street without a licence when he pulled into a driveway. Police flagged down the vehicle and Mippy ran for about 200m before he was arrested. He had alcohol in his blood and was found in possession of 0.1g of methamphetamine. On December 7, 2021, Mippy entered a caravan parked at a Meekatharra caravan park and stole property before being chased out by the owner. Defence council Zoe Gilders told the court Mippy’s last relationship was toxic and volatile and would live with his new partner and their family. Magistrate Angus Hockton said a period of remand was difficult because Mippy couldn’t be involved in programs sentenced prisoners could. Mr Hockton said Mippy missed out on being there for the birth of his child in April and he “won’t get that experience back”. Mippy will be eligible for parole after a district court appearance on Thursday.
