Carnarvon sides win big in Gascoyne footy comp with league hoping for more development to come
The Gascoyne Football Association is looking forward to an expanded competition next year after Carnarvon won this year’s league.
The association hopes to go back to four senior teams next season from a three-team competition this year, and are planning a dedicated women’s competition after several trial matches.
Secretary Tessa Daly said expanding the competition would be a step forward.
“We are very excited for a full (women’s) competition next year,” she said. Carnarvon Ramblers won the league premiership against Exmouth, kicking 15.14 (104) to the Eagles’ 9.8 (62).
Brett Byron was best afield and captain Daven Lansdown kicked three goals for Ramblers.
Jett Forbes, Jake Laycock and Corey Roe each got two goals for Ramblers, while Chase Faxon and Riley Green got two each for Exmouth.
In the colts, Warriors beat Ramblers 10.10 (70) to 3.4 (22).
The colts grand final featured eight girls, including best-afield Taneesha Finch, who has experience playing for South Fremantle.
In the Central Midlands Coastal Football League, Lancelin Ledge Point are through to the grand final after they won their semifinal against Moora on Saturday, 16.6 (102) to 12.11 (83).
Moora now get a second chance and will play Cervantes next Saturday in the preliminary as the LeCras brothers, Brent and Mark, play finals in their first campaign back in country footy.
Brent LeCras booted six majors and West Coast premiership hero Mark LeCras had one as the Tiger Sharks overwhelmed Dandaragan by more than 10 goals in the previous round, 14.15 (99) to 5.6 (36).
Meanwhile in the Great Northern Football League, two-time AFL premiership player Harry Taylor blasted his way to the top of the goal scoring charts.
Taylor booted 12 goals on Saturday to take his season haul to 83 as Northampton beat Towns 26.20 (176) to the Bulldogs’ 2.5 (17), sealing second place and a second semifinal against minor premiers Brigades.
