Family of Constable Anthony Woods hold Woodsy’s Walk to Remember to raise money and honour fallen cop

Step-by-step and surrounded by serenity, Constable Anthony Woods — who lost his life in the line of duty — will be remembered in a walk to honour his memory while also raising funds for a good cause. More than 100 people will gather at Lake Leschenaultia in Chidlow on Saturday for the inaugural Woodsy’s Walk to Remember, which will raise money for WA Police Legacy, a charity that supports families of fallen police officers. Constable Woods suffered critical injuries when he was allegedly run over during an arrest in Ascot last year. He sadly succumbed to his injuries in hospital three days later. Const. Woods’ death sent shockwaves across the country, with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese sending his condolences and police commissioners from around the country attending his funeral to pay their respects. Reagan Ainsley Chown is due to face trial accused of murdering Const. Woods. The late officer’s mum and dad, Natalie and Todd, thought up the idea for a walk in their son’s name while on holiday recently as a way not only to remember him but to raise money for a charity close to their hearts. Mrs Woods said the event has had an “amazing” response. Supporters expected to take part include officers from Belmont police station, where Const. Woods worked before his death, along with his family, friends and Police Commissioner Col Blanch. Mr Woods said a walk was a good way to bring people together to talk, and encompassed his son’s love for fitness. They hope the walk can become an annual event. Both parents are still struggling with their loss, Mr Woods saying it is “still very, very raw. “It will be like that for a long time,” he said. WA Police Commander and WA Police Legacy chainman Quentin Flatman said the walk was a way to commemorate Const. Woods’ service to the community while also raising funds. “It’s an opportune time for everyone to gather, share their grief, commemorate the life and service of Anthony as well as sharing stories of him and his family and what he provided to everybody who ever knew him,” he said. Cdr Flatman said WA Police Legacy currently supports 47 children of police officers who have died and 421 widows. Registrations for the walk have closed, but everyone is welcome to attend on the day between 8am and 12pm, with a sausage sizzle and drinks available along with merchandise on sale, with funds to go to WA Police Legacy.
