Perth and WA 1979: When stars such as Prince Charles came to town and space debris from Skylab fell to earth

Perhaps it was written in the stars. But whatever the reason, 1979 was a big year for WA. The State variously celebrated or commiserated over its history, royalty came to town and was given a right royal welcome by WA’s very own modelling queen. The space age took centre stage and its consequences literally rained down upon us. Sporting events provided memories for the ages and nature unleashed — in the sky and under the ground. The year 1979 comes under a renewed spotlight in Disney’s new series, Last Days Of The Space Age, set in Perth. And looking back at the time, real life WA provided plenty of its own drama. For starters, it was the year of WA’s sesquicentenary, the 150th anniversary of the founding of the Swan River colony in 1829. The year was dubbed West Australia Year 79, or WAY 79 and a memorable logo featuring a stylised swan was everywhere as numerous communities held their own celebrations. But not everyone was happy. Indigenous leaders handed a “notice to quit” to the governor, Sir Wallace Kyle, at a concert to open the year. Premier Sir Charles Court dismissed the protest as a “cheap and ill-conceived stunt”. In March 1979, Federal minister for Aboriginal affairs, WA Liberal Senator Fred Chaney, sympathised with protests about the 150th celebration, saying he understood it meant “different things to different people”. More serious clashes loomed. On June 5, State Cabinet sought urgent legal advice over an application by Amex Petroleum to drill for oil on the remote Noonkanbah pastoral lease in the Kimberley. On June 15, Indigenous protesters and miners confronted each other across the boundary of the station and the gates were locked, setting up a long battle that saw a police escort to Noonkanbah the following year. As part of the 150th anniversary WA received a now-unthinkably long 16-day visit from the then Prince Charles. At the airport Charles was met by dignitaries — with some of the women in the official party, including the governor’s wife Lady Kyle, in period dress — and a small but enthusiastic crowd which offered gifts, including boomerangs and carnations. At Barrack Square. Charles watched a re-enactment of the landing from the river of first governor James Stirling, and he unveiled a statue of Capt. Stirling. In the days that followed he played polo, sailed on the river and got out of the city with visits to numerous regional centres. But the lasting image of the 1979 trip was that of an encounter at North Cottesloe beach with model Jane Priest. The encounter was set up by photographer Kerry Edwards — who knew the Prince had a routine of a morning swim at the beach — and social writer Juanita Walsh. Years later Priest told The West Australian that when the Prince got to North Cottesloe he had walked past and gone into the water. “I decided he wasn’t going to ruin my 15 seconds of fame so I went in too,” Priest said. “He bodysurfed in on a wave so I did too, to catch up with him. Of course, I was dumped by the wave and emerged spluttering and bedraggled. “I had spent half an hour putting on make-up and making sure my hair was OK only to end up on my backside, covered in sand and foam, right at his feet. “I put my hand on his chest, leant forward and gave him a peck. “He threw up his hands and said, ‘I can’t touch you!’ and I realised later I had probably put him in a difficult situation with the kiss.” The photos went around the world. There was a different sort of star power on display when a giant abandoned US space station by the name of Skylab dropped in — literally. Skylab began to fall out of the sky in the early hours of July 12, 1979 and disintegrated into bits in a fiery explosion as it plummeted to earth, scattering debris across the south, Nullarbor and the Eastern Goldfields. Residents reported “gigantic booms” and the sky lighting up. Souvenir hunters and media descended on the area in equal numbers. The San Francisco Examiner posted a US$10,000 reward for the first person to deliver a piece of Skylab to its office within 72 hours of the crash. Then 17-year-old Stan Thornton found several chunks in his Esperance backyard and a Perth radio station whisked Mr Thornton to America and he collected his prize. As luck would have it, Skylab’s spectacular arrival was just a week before 700 million people tuned in to watch the Miss Universe contest at the Perth Entertainment Centre. A chunk of Skylab was brought to Perth to be a prop in the beauty pageant. But Perth’s publicity coup was soured when a plywood catwalk collapsed after Miss Venezuela, Maritza Sayalero, was crowned Miss Universe. Contestants plunged to the floor and two were taken to hospital with minor injuries. Fortunately the city’s image escaped major injury — it all happened just after the live broadcast to the US had ended. “It was all so quick; I thought it was an earthquake,” Miss Malta, Dian Bartolo said. But there was significant damage that year when a real earthquake hammered the tiny Wheatbelt town of Cadoux. Measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale, the quake struck at about 5.50pm on June 2 with a deafening bang. A number of buildings in the town and surrounds were wrecked and several families had lucky escapes from serious injury. There was more of nature’s fury when WA’s north was hammered by Tropical cyclone Hazel. The Bureau of Meteorology recalls that Hazel formed off the northwest Kimberley coast and developed into a severe tropical cyclone off the Pilbara coast before turning south and crossing the coast at Shark Bay on March 13. A Taiwanese fishing boat and its crew of 15 was lost in heavy seas north of Barrow Island. Jetties were damaged at Exmouth, Cape Cuvier, Carnarvon and Denham and buildings were inundated with sea water between Carnarvon and Shark Bay. Total damage was put at $20 million. In what seems today like an unfathomable decision, 1979 was also the year in which it was announced that the Fremantle to Perth railway was to shut down. The shock move was announced in a headline in The West Australian in January: Perth-port railway line to be closed. “Passenger services on the Perth-Fremantle railway are to be scrapped and replaced by a bus service in September,” the article said. “Freight services on the line — the second oldest in WA — will continue for about another two years. “Later the line will be converted to a major road to ease traffic pressure on Stirling Highway.” The Liberal-led coalition government said losses on the Fremantle-Perth passenger service — estimated at $2.7 million for the financial year, an increased loss of $700,000, gave it no alternative but closure. People power sprang into action, protests and petitions were organised and after Labor was elected in 1983 the service was reopened. There was also policy of a progressive nature on show in 1979 when Fremantle restaurateur Nunzio Gumina was given permission for a three-month trial of alfresco dining at Papa Luigi’s on South Terrace — beginning a trend that changed the way West Australians dined out. As ever, footy and cricket were the dominant sports. For once champion fast bowler Dennis Lillee created headlines at the WACA Ground not with the ball, but with the bat. In December 1979, Lillee walked out with an aluminium bat to take on the English Test attack. After Lillee faced four balls from Ian Botham, England captain Mike Brearley complained to the umpires that the bat was wrecking the ball. The game was held up for 10 minutes while the matter was resolved with Lillee flinging the bat on to the outfield in disgust as Australian captain Greg Chappell brought him out a traditional blade. The use of non-wood bats was outlawed from the game by the MCC in 1980. And footy had a huge moment when WA beat Victoria at Subiaco Oval to win the State-of-Origin carnival in October, 1979. The origin concept blazed gloriously before the VFL became the AFL and WA joined in. Last Days of The Space Age creator David Chidlow said Perth and its magnificent isolation had always held a fascination. “The fact that NASA somehow conspired to orchestrate a stellar near-miss between a vast spaceship and the world’s most isolated city struck me as a wonderful, surreal story,” Chidlow said.
