Police have launched an investigation after a motorcycle rider died shortly after a pursuit was called off.

NSW Police were patrolling the Jamberoo area on the south coast, about 120km south of Sydney, when they attempted to stop a motorcycle rider for a random breath test about 3.35pm on Sunday.

Police will allege when the rider failed to stop, officers began to pursue him in their car.

“Police immediately commenced first aid on the rider before NSW Ambulance paramedics arrived; however, he died at the scene,” the spokesman said.

“He is yet to be formally identified.”

The Wollongong Police District critical incident team will investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash.

The investigation is also subject to an independent review.
