Williamson moves base down to Perth as he keeps title hopes alive at Ellenbrook
Geraldton Sprintcar star Callum Williamson kept his championship hopes alive with a fourth-place finish in round nine of the Toyota Sprintcar Series in his first race with new crew RPM Race Products.
Ellenbrook hosted round nine of the season on the weekend and it was the first time for his new crew after Williamson Motorsport made the decision to base the team out of Perth in their Cockburn shop.
RPM Race Products managing director Rick Musarra has high hopes for the partnership.
‘’I’m excited to welcome Callum, Carl, and the Williamson Motorsport team to the RPM Race Products family,” he said.
“When I started RPM Race Products 2.5 years ago this was always the goal to have a ‘house car’ based out of our workshop.
“I believe this partnership will be able to thrive on the racetrack going forward.’’
The defending champion has not had the rub of the green so far this season with no podium finishes and a best result of fifth place which he has achieved three times.
He has at least been consistent, only finishing outside the top 10 on two occasions including one DNF which means he is still in contention for a third title provided he gets results moving in the right direction.
But Williamson had the worst start possible, crashing out in his first heat and putting his new crew chief Brodie Moller under pressure. But the team did a stellar job to get the car turned around and allow Williamson to win the third heat.
He went on to finish second in the B dash and qualify fourth for the A feature where track position proved to be key as the top four stayed the same from start to finish despite a red-light stoppage for a big three-car crash.
It represented the best result for Williamson so far this season and moves him to third in the championship standings, 48 points behind leader James Inglis.
The move to Perth and RPM Race Products brings an end a 10-year relationship with Crew Chief Jay Prow who along with Williamson led the team to 13 race wins in the series and back-to-back championships.
Williamson said Prow has been instrumental to their success.
‘’Jay has been a massive part of our team and we as a team have grown together over the past 10 years. With work taking its toll and being extremely busy, we as a team have decided to take a change of direction with our racing program and have decided by basing the team down in Perth,” the team said.
“We cannot thank Jay enough for what his done for our team and he is always welcome in our trailer for a beer.”
Prow was pleased with what he and the team was able to achieve in his time at the helm.
“Couldn’t be prouder of what we built and the guys are going to achieve moving forward,” he said.
