Traditional owners and State Government come to agreement on joint management of Ningaloo coastal reserves

The State Government has announced a joint management plan for coastal reserves along the Ningaloo coast with local traditional owners. According to the plan, the Nganhurra Thanardi Garrbu Aboriginal Corporation and Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions have agreed to protect Indigenous culture and native wildlife while developing the local tourism sector. NGTAC chair Paul Baron welcomed the agreement. “We have a responsibility for our country,” he said. “We look forward to the traditional owners working together with Government and being employed on country, learning and teaching each other. “Through joint management we are getting to reintroduce traditional names to country, which is really special as well as develop Indigenous tourism opportunities.” Environment Minister Reece Whitby said the plan would help ensure the local economy without hurting what made the Ningaloo coast special. “This plan will guide joint management of the area for the next decade, helping safeguard Ningaloo’s globally recognised natural and cultural values. “Together, we can build new tourism and economic opportunities for traditional owners and continue to provide visitors with a unique wilderness experience.”
