The Shire of Carnarvon has awarded a tender to construct workers’ accommodation to help ease the town’s housing shortage.

The tender, which closed in March, has been awarded to a local building company to construct two new residences on Parnaa View in Brockman.

A shire spokesperson said the council had decided to apply to the WA Treasury Corporation for a $500,000 loan, which would be combined with a Regional Economic Development grant of $182,855.

The remaining required funds will come from the council’s 2024-25 budget.

The spokesperson said the housing project aimed to “address the pressing shortage of appropriate housing for workers relocating to Carnarvon”, and was expected to boost further development of the remaining available lots on Parnaa View as part of the broader Northwater Development.

Council officers conducted a cash flow analysis, with projections of a positive return on investment for the shire.

“This project provides a much-needed solution to the housing shortage, and offers an opportunity for the council to consider replacing its ageing residential assets,” the spokesperson said.

“Additionally, there is potential for future financial recovery through the sale of these existing assets.

“This development marks a significant step towards improving living conditions for workers in Carnarvon and fostering economic growth in the region.”
