Shire of Carnarvon announces April 2023 Rocks Carnarvon Festival to make the most of the eclipse hype
With visitors set to flock to the Gascoyne region to get a view of the total solar eclipse next year, Carnarvon is seizing the opportunity to host a week-long festival celebrating the town’s history, culture and night sky.
The April 2023 Rocks Carnarvon Festival will take place from April 15 to April 22 — to coincide with the eclipse which is due to happen on April 20.
Events include stargazing, Aboriginal night sky tours, an astronomy photography exhibition, a life sized Gascoyne-themed trivia board game, and a “Night at the Museum” experience hosted by the Carnarvon Space Museum.
Up to 5000 people are expected to descend on Carnarvon during the week of the festival.
Shire of Carnarvon president Eddie Smith said the eclipse would provide a special opportunity for Carnarvon, and he wanted to see his town make the most of it.
“This is a very exciting announcement for our community,” he said.
“With thousands of international and domestic visitors expected to travel to WA for the total solar eclipse, the Rocks Carnarvon Festival will assist in easing some of the pressure on Exmouth. The festival will entice visitors to spend more time in Carnarvon and showcase everything our community has to offer.”
