Pom in Oz with Derek Goforth: Reflecting on the privilege and daunting responsibilities of fatherhood

As I sit here, reflecting on my journey as a father now into its 18th year, I can’t help but marvel at the transformation that has occurred within me since the day I first held my child in my arms. Becoming a father was obviously a life-altering moment, one that forever changed the way I see the world and myself. It’s a journey that has been both challenging and rewarding, filled with ups and downs, but above all, it has been a journey of love and compassion From the moment I learned I was going to be a father all those years ago in my early 30s, a wave of emotions rushed over me. Excitement mixed with trepidation mixed with sheer panic. Would I be a good father? Could I provide the love and support my child needed to grow into a happy and confident individual? The day my first child was born was surreal. As I held her for the first time, a sense of wonder and awe washed over me, (mixed with a lot of confusion, was she supposed to be blue?). In that moment, all the worries and doubts I had began to disappear, replaced by a fierce determination to be the best father I could be. Being a dad has taught me so much. The importance of patience and understanding. From sleepless nights to temper tantrums, each challenge has allowed me to develop a deeper understanding of my children’s needs and emotions. I have learned to step back, take a breath, and approach difficult situations with empathy. Through it all, I’ve come to realise I’m not just teaching my children about life; they are teaching me about myself and the kind of person I want to be. For me, one of the most significant realisations of fatherhood is the importance of being present and involved. Each milestone, from the first steps to the first words, is a testament to the fleeting nature of childhood. It hasn’t always been easy. Balancing the demands of work, family, and personal growth has been a constant juggling act. There have been moments of guilt when a social life took precedence over a bedtime story or playtime. However, I’ve come to understand that being a dad is not about being perfect; it’s about showing up, being present, and giving my child the love and attention they deserve. Children are like sponges, absorbing everything around them, and as a dad, I know that my actions speak louder than my words. I strive to be the kind of person I hope my children will become — compassionate, resilient, and always eager to learn and grow. I hope my kids look at me with a little pride, a little acknowledgment that I do try, I do new things and things that challenge me. For me, through this journey of fatherhood, I have also found a deeper bond with my partner, the mother of our children. I literally don’t know where I would be without her As my children grow older, I can’t help but feel a bittersweet tug at my heartstrings. Time waits for no one, and soon they will be exploring the world on their own, facing their own challenges, and making their own decisions. But the love that binds us will remain steadfast, whatever path they choose to walk. And I will be cheering them on every step of the way.
