New Irwin Arrowsmith Advisory Council ensures Mid West heavy industry stays in community’s best interest

The Mid West may see a new independent advisory board established to capitalise and help the region cope with significant projects planned or under way, including in the hydrogen and renewables sectors. The Arrowsmith Hub, within the shires of Irwin, Carnamah, Mingenew and Three Springs, contains a significant amount of the investment from mining, energy and the emerging hydrogen and renewables sectors. Citing a pressing need for a co-ordinated approach to future development, the Shire of Irwin hopes to establish the Irwin Arrowsmith Advisory Council, a body ensuring local communities are not negatively affected by industry expansion. The IAAC would work to maximise opportunities for social and economic participation by the local community; plan effectively so industry expansion was supported and not constrained by infrastructure requirements; deliver long-term community benefits; and conserve the natural environment. lt would also aim to foster collaborative solutions, build community confidence, and identify local Indigenous and small business engagement and participation opportunities. The council would also carefully consider and manage environmental or cultural heritage impacts from industry expansion, including the protection of natural assets including groundwater, biodiversity and natural attractions which are central to the region’s tourism industry and enjoyed by locals. The Shire has been consulting with the Mid West Development Commission, the Mid West Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Mid West Hydrogen Technology Cluster, neighbouring shires, the Yamatji Southern Regional Corporation and companies in the Arrowsmith region. The council was due to vote to endorse and approve the expenditure in the 2023-24 budget to establish the IAAC on Tuesday. Once the IAAC is operational, the Shire would be reimbursed the funds used to establish the council.
