Mid West Indian Cultural Society holds Holi Festival at Pages Beach Geraldton, spreading love and colour

About 100 people gathered at Pages Beach on Sunday to celebrate the start of Spring with the Holi Festival, with plenty of colour in the air and Indian snacks to share around. The Holi Festival saw the community arrive in white and leave covered in multi-coloured powder during a day of fun and love while samosas, gulab jamun and pizza filled bellies after the colourful parade. Mid West Indian Cultural Society founder Hari Kumar said he was overwhelmed to see the response from the community and looked forward to hosting more events throughout the year. “Holi is the festival of colour, it’s been celebrated all around Australia and the world. It’s the welcoming of a season and spreading colour on each other, spreading love and friendship in a moment where we all come together,” he said. “The colour powder is Australian-made, allergy-free and biodegradable and goes away when you wash your shirt.” Mr Kumar said the festival of love symbolised a time to put old things aside and begin a new chapter and any culture was welcome to participate. “We are Australians of Indian origin and we want to celebrate our culture and heritage with the wider community and make sure our future generations understand and embrace their culture,” he said. The day of the Holi Festival is celebrated on Wednesday, March 8 around the world.
