Local softballer Eli Etherton showcased his talent at the recent under-18s softball National Championships held in Mirrabooka this month.

Having been overlooked by Western Australia in the recent selections, Etherton entered the draft and was picked up by South Australia.

Representing the State at the under-18 championships, Etherton was able to showcase his talents on the team, even though they didn’t secure a victory.

South Australia, in the process of rebuilding their men’s competition, displayed competitiveness in each match.

The 17-year-old’s mother Helen Etherton expressed her pride in her son’s performance on the big stage.

“I personally thought he played quality softball. SA didn’t win a game, but they are working on rebuilding, and Eli was happy to be competing at that higher level against quality ball players,” she said.

After coming back from the nationals, Etherton expressed his gratitude to his pitching coach, Ashley Walker, as well as his South Australia teammates and officials, who he said made him feel an integral part of the team.

“I really appreciate all the help I get from Ashley Walker, not just for my pitching but making me mentally strong,” he said.

“The officials and players from South Australia made me feel very welcome and part of the team . . . I really want to thank the Josh Kennedy Foundation for continued support.”

Now back home in Geraldton, Etherton will return to the Batavia Blaze in the local league.

Following this, he plans to participate in the winter season of the Perth Softball League, representing the Cockburn Cougars Softball Club.

The nationals were held on January 16-21.
