‘Lightning strike’ fires at Beekeepers Reserve contained

Several bushfires raging uncontrollably in the Beekeepers Nature Reserve since Thursday have now been contained according to the Parks and Wildlife service.

The bushfires, first reported at 3.12pm on December 10, was caused by a lightning strike within the reserve.

Almost one quarter of the Beekeepers Nature Reserve has been affected by the fires, with more than 24,000ha burnt.

Earlier today a spokesperson told the Mid West Times efforts were being made to strengthen containment lines but there was a risk of the fire escalating due to high wind speeds.

According to the spokesperson, as of 12.45pm today the fires were contained but still burning uncontrollably.

“Although there is no immediate danger you need to be aware and keep up to date in case the situation changes,” they said.

Indian Ocean Drive and Coolimba-Eneabba Road remained closed to the public due to the fire risk.
