Crime gives back as almost $1m from seized assets is put towards community groups, including Carnarvon program

As Carnarvon continues to struggle with levels of rising crime, some financial relief is on the way through the State Government’s Criminal Property Confiscation Grants Program. Announced last Wednesday, six grants totalling $983,045 will be offered to not-for-profit groups to run projects in Perth and regional WA, with the aim of assisting vulnerable citizens and diverting people from the criminal justice system. The money was raised through the seizure of property related to crime with the projects stretching from Armadale to Carnarvon. The Shire of Carnarvon was allocated $110,000 to help with its The Future is Me program. The program looks to convert areas affected by crime by delivering activities such as building community furniture, public art and community gardens in order to promote a safer and more engaged community space. Attorney General John Quigley said the grants would help to end the cycle of crime plaguing these communities. “I’m pleased to see these worthy programs funded, allowing grassroots organisations to make a real difference in their communities,” he said. “From the city to the country, several of the recipients engage with and assist young people, keeping their lives on track and helping to break the cycles of violence and crime. “Importantly, the programs are specific and targeted, often providing access to vital services that vulnerable people wouldn’t otherwise receive.” Local governments and not-for-profit groups can apply for grants of up to $200,000 for projects which support victims of crime, prevent or reduce drug-related crime or aid law enforcement.
