CMCFL round 5: Jurien Bay take top spot after 89-point win over rival Cervantes while Lancelin dominate Moora
Reigning premiers Jurien Bay demolished their rivals Cervantes over the weekend in a 21.11 (137) to 7.6 (48) contest on Saturday.
The two sides have a long-standing rivalry that was dominated by the Tiger Sharks in recent years, but the Bulldogs got up over them last year in the finals as they went on to win the flag.
Cervantes managed to claim revenge in round one of the 2024 season with an eight-point win.
In the second meeting between the two sides during round five, Jurien Bay came back hard with the big win during Belt Up round.
Jurien Bay blew out the match in the second and third quarters, kicking seven goals in each period as they amassed their biggest score for the season.
Lancelin didn’t kick more than two goals in a single quarter and struggled to keep up with the Bulldogs in the 89-point blowout.
The Bulldogs saw players stuff the stat sheet in the win, with Curtis Altinier kicking five goals and Matthew Bogensperger and Jacob Jennings bagging three each. Isaac Devitt-Boyd kicked three goals for Cervantes.
The win now has the Bulldogs sitting on top of the ladder in the Central Midlands Coastal Football League after the first five rounds with a 3-1 record.
At Lancelin, the Pirates fell behind in the first quarter but picked up steam to blow out the Mavericks 16.18 (114) to 2.9 (21).
Moora are still yet to clock a win this season but looked hopeful early in the match on Saturday, with the side kicking two early goals and outscoring Lancelin Ledge Point in the first quarter.
The difference between the teams became apparent as the game progressed as Moora couldn’t kick another goal for the rest of the match, while the home side ran up the score in the 93-point demolition.
Zachary Hearne enjoyed a day out with five goals for the Pirates, helped by another four from David Hussey and two from Thomas Abbott.
The Mavericks’ two goals come from Logan Purser and Bradley Smith.
Round six sets up an exciting clash between the Tiger Sharks and Dandaragan in Cervantes, while top side Jurien Bay host bottom side Moora. Both games will be played at 2.15pm on Saturday.
In the reserves, an eight-goal haul from Harrison Park helped Jurien Bay get up over Cervantes 15.9 (99) to 5.4 (34) and Moora beat Lancelin 8.7 (55) to 6.11 (47).
