Carnarvon Yacht Club ‘picks up pace’ to clear access to sea
Carnarvon Yacht Club has been dredging the fascine sandbar in an effort to give its landlocked boats access to the sea.
General manager Jim Williams said the club’s dredge Community Spirit had been working for two months to create about 230m of channel so far.
“We are picking up pace which is great,” he said.
“It is difficult to say how long it will take, there’s about 370m to cut just to get to the entrance to the ocean.
“There could be other obstacles in the way plus Pelican Point is increasing the reach across the entrance.”
Mr Williams said the Chamber of Commerce had donated $10,000 to cover parts and repairs to the dredge, and the Shire of Carnarvon had allocated $50,000 to the trial dredging without promising any future funding.
“It’s very much a combined community effort because we have had many people donate time and money,” he said.
