Mid West residents are being asked to consider a strategy to bolster revenue streams in Carnarvon, with one recommendation including a 3.5 per cent rate rise.

Council last week approved the Shire of Carnarvon’s draft revenue strategy for 2022, with chief executive Andrea Selvey making the development of the plan one of her top priorities for the 2021-22 year.

The strategy recommends a 3.5 per cent rate rise, but allows for an annual deliberation should rates need to be increased or lowered.

It also suggests council consider implementing a higher differential rate for mining, special-use rural, commercial, intensive horticultural, and industrial properties.

A specified area rate will be considered for the NorthWater Estate, with the Shire’s revenue strategy saying this would allow the local government to better maintain access to the fascine waterway, public spaces and gardens.

Shire president Eddie Smith said the strategy was designed to improve local government transparency by providing the community with “clear and detailed information” about the Shire’s revenue sources.

“The revenue strategy is a living document, and it needs to be flexible to be able to respond to a changing external environment and to changes in community demand and expectations,” he said.

Residents and stakeholders are invited to present feedback on the strategy before council formally adopts the recommendations later this year.
