Around the Grounds: Cervantes remain undefeated while Dandaragan are saved by poor goal kicking from Mavericks

Cervantes kept their undefeated streak alive when they won a back-and-forward clash with Jurien Bay on the weekend. The Tiger Sharks managed to hold on in the coastal derby, winning by seven points against the Bulldogs who had a red-hot start to their season, but have since evened out in their past two games. Cervantes sit at the top of the Central Midlands Coastal Football League ladder with a 4-0 record after the 12.8 (80) to 11.7 (73) win. Jurien Bay got off to a fast start, kicking three goals clear after Cervantes opened the game with two goals and a behind. The second quarter saw the momentum swing the other way with the Tiger Sharks responding with four goals of their own to the Bulldogs’ three. The boys in gold and black took a seven-point lead into half-time. The Bulldogs pulled the game back in their favour in the third quarter, leading by a single point going into the final term. But they could not hold on, as the Tiger Sharks kicked four majors in the final quarter to remain undefeated. Four goals from James Venturini and three from Daniel Frost proved to be too much for the Bulldogs, even with four from Scott Worthington. As part of the Belt Up round, Jack Beer from Cervantes and Ryan Steers from Jurien Bay were presented with the Belt Up jumper and ball for the game. Since starting their season with a 43-point loss, Dandaragan have been on a roll, winning three straight and climbing to second on the ladder after a 8.11 (59) to 5.18 (48) victory over Moora. Moora have only managed one win so far this season but they led by three points at the end of the first quarter. The Mavericks continued to hold off the second-placed team, leading 5.9 to the Saints 5.7 at half-time. Moora’s poor accuracy let them down in the second quarter as they failed to score another major. Dandaragan took a 15-point lead in the third quarter but managed two points in the final term, giving Moora the opportunity they needed to steal the game. However, the Mavericks could not get the job done, kicking six behinds in the fourth and falling by 11 points. Dandaragan’s win came off the boot of Campbell Putland who kicked four goals, while Oliver McDonald was the only multiple scorer for Moora with two goals. The Saints’ Todd Kenny and Mavericks Samuel Cameron were presented with the Belt Up jumper and ball for the game.
