CBH stalwarts call time on long careers

CBH Geraldton is losing the services of four employees with more than 140 years of combined experience who decided to retire after this summer’s bumper harvest.

Geraldton terminal manager Eric Cooper, who began his career 37 years ago operating a broom and shovel as a temporary harvest worker, said he had enjoyed his time at CBH immensely.

“I didn’t think I’d be in a managing role — I started off here as a casual plant operator,” he said.

“I just was lucky at the end of that casual period there was an opportunity to stay on.”

Mr Cooper said he had seen the industry become increasingly mechanised and had operated many of the machines himself before taking on a management role. He said the best times in the job were also the most challenging times, and he had enjoyed the camaraderie that came from working with a disciplined team who took pride in their work.

Country quality co-ordinator Bruce Heritage is retiring this week after 39 years of service.

Terminal quality co-ordinator James Main (40 years) and Geraldton maintenance superintendent Maurice Norman (301/2 years) have already left after more than 70 years of combined service to CBH.

CBH Geraldton Zone manager Duncan Gray paid tribute to their service.

“Eric, Bruce, James and Maurice have each contributed tirelessly over many, many years to ensure grain growers in the Wheatbelt region receive quality service,” he said.
