Kai Lohmann signs two-year contract extension with Brisbane Lions
Brisbane Lions grand final hero and emerging cult figure Kai Lohmann may have matured but vowed he will “carry on a bit still” having inked a two-year contract extension, adding momentum to the club’s premiership defence that begins in three weeks.
The 21-year-old kicked three goals in the opening half of last year’s demolition of Sydney at the MCG, finishing with four and capping off a breakout year that has earnt him a spot at the Lions until the end of 2027.
Lohman kicked 36 goals from 27 games in 2024, including his pivotal grand final performance, which all came with high-energy antics that will be on full display in 2025, with a new backing track, at least for home games, thanks to teammate Charlie Cameron.
The Gabba will be rocking to the sounds of Boney M’s 1976 hit Daddy Cool- after his goals.
“It’s a bit catchy, a bit of a TikTok song at the moment a few fans sent it to me,” Lohmann smiled.
“They’ll (the celebrations) never go; shout out to Charlie how he’s always sending me TikToks of dances and stuff.
“So expect a bit this year.
“I’m a little bit more mature, but I carry on a bit still.
“I’m someone who is always himself, but I think I’ve grown up over the last few months.”
Lohmann resisted the urge to return home to Victoria, and overcame some homesickness after being drafted in 2021, to recommit to the Lions.
“I wasn’t playing, was a little bit homesick but the club’s been great and now it feels like home and it’s an easy decision,” he said.
“I feel like I’m part of a big family rather than a football club. I love everything about this club, which is why I re-signed, it’s not just because of one person or one thing.
“I love going into the club every day, as I feel like it’s somewhere I can truly be myself.
“There is also a lot for the club to look forward to over the next few years, so I am really excited I will be here to see what we can achieve.”
Lohman only played eight matches in his first two seasons but after a taste of success wants more.
“I had some great moments last year, but it wouldn’t have been possible without the support around me both in and out of the club,” he said.
“I am really excited to continue improving and working to get the best out of myself and my teammates every day.
“I am obsessed with trying to get better and personally I want to contribute as much as I can to helping the team and the club be successful.
“We have a very special group here and I hope we can achieve a lot of success together in the next few years.”
