Works to begin on upgrading flood-damaged Middalya Crossing in Carnarvon

Works are set to commence on the restoration of a Carnarvon crossing damaged during last year’s flooding.

Gascoyne earthworks business Exmouth Civil has been awarded a contract to repair and upgrade the Middalya Crossing, located on the Minilya–Lyndon Road in Carnarvon.

The town was allocated $13 million through the jointly funded Commonwealth-State Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements to repair road infrastructure damaged the February 2021 flooding event, with construction on the Middalya Crossing to start in the coming weeks.

But the funding only covers costs to restore roads to pre-flood condition, with the Shire of Carnarvon contributing an additional $310,000 to upgrade the crossing.

Shire president Eddie Smith said the works would include the installation of an upstream concrete cut-off wall along the full length of the crossing to minimise risk of future crossing flood damage.

“Council recognises the need to adapt and improve our roads to better withstand extreme weather events,” he said.

“It is important we invest in the resilience of our communities by building stronger and more reliable infrastructure.

“We want to ensure our communities remain connected through future cyclones or other natural disaster events.”
