Snapshot in Time: Restoration hope for iconic steam locomotive engine moved from Maitland Park 25 years ago

Many Geraldton locals will recall the steam locomotive engine that resided in Maitland Park from 1966 to 1999. It was a class B, number 6 locomotive which was built in 1891 and operated on the Midland line in the Geraldton District until 1956. Due to its location, generations of Geraldton Senior High School students will remember its iconic silhouette. However, more than 30 years of exposure to the elements had left the train engine in a dangerously dilapidated state, and with this in mind, it was removed from the park on July 30, 1999. The steam engine was relocated to a sheltered environment at the Walkaway Station Museum, a fitting location as it represents the junction of two railway systems, the Western Australian Government Railway and the Midland Railway Company. As one of the most recognised sights in Geraldton, it is hoped that the steam locomotive will be restored and continue to represent Geraldton alongside attractions such as the Point Moore lighthouse, the fifty-cent swing and the yellow submarine.
