The WA Nationals are committing $25,000 towards a program to assist retail workers dealing with increased antisocial behaviour in Geraldton.
If the Nationals form government at the State election, the money would be given to the Mid West Chamber of Commerce and Industry. A chamber-facilitated program would give workers the knowledge in how to handle certain behaviour, including shoplifting.
The party’s candidate for Geraldton Kirrilee Warr said the goal was to provide locals with the confidence to handle tough situations.
“This initiative trains local retail staff to identify and report suspicious behaviour, enhance communication techniques and implement crime prevention strategies,” she said.
“This initiative will empower retail employees in Geraldton and the greater Mid West region to effectively respond to the rising concerns of theft and criminal activity in our communities.”
The funding would be through the party’s Community Champions Fund, which was designed to support grassroots projects.
Ms Warr said local businesses deserved to have resources to create a safer shopping environment.
“As crime rates continue to escalate, it is crucial that we take proactive measures to protect our local economies and the livelihoods they support,” she said.
“This requires a collaborative effort. By working together, we can develop targeted strategies that not only enhance safety but also support our local businesses.”
The announcement comes after the Nationals held a community law and order forum in Geraldton last week.
