The City of Greater Geraldton is considering inviting one of the country’s most important representatives to the Mid West to give her a better understanding of the issues within the community.

Sam Mostyn is Australia’s Governor-General, representing King Charles as head of state and being commander-in-chief of the Australian Defence Force.

She had an extensive career in law and business, and was sworn in to the role earlier this month.

According to the City of Greater Geraldton council meeting agenda, executives believed inviting the Governor-General would provide an opportunity for her to meet local members in the Mid West community, and learn more about the region and the issues within it.

Author of the report and chief executive Ross McKim said the invitation, if councillors vote in favour, would be a combined approach from multiple Mid West shires.

He wrote in the report Ms Mostyn recently spoke at the Australian Local Government Association Annual Congress in Canberra, saying local government had “the highest level of community trust”.

City of Greater Geraldton mayor Jerry Clune said he thought it would be a great opportunity.

“We’ve got things like the Sydney II Memorial every year, so there’s opportunity for her to attend,” he said.

“To get her over to the west, rather than running up and down the east coast all the time would be great.

“It would be a great thing to enlighten her of where we live and why we live here.”

Councillors will vote on whether to direct the city executives to make a formal invitation to Ms Mostyn at its meeting on Tuesday, July 30.
