Geraldton’s Ringo McKenna selected in the Australian Country cricket team after a stand-out performance for WA

Geraldton’s Ringo McKenna has climbed a new peak with selection in the Australian Country cricket team. The 23-year-old left-arm paceman, who started with Wanderers and now captains Towns, was picked after taking 13 wickets at 19.38 for WA Country in the Toyota Australian Country Cricket Championships. WA Country did not fare well in recently concluded six-team event held in South Australia’s Barossa Valley, finishing fifth with a 4-5 record. But McKenna was a stand-out conceding just over 4.6 runs an over in a mix of 50 and 20-over games. He took wickets in all but one of the eight games he played. Three Geraldton cricketers also played in WA Country’s women’s side which also finished fifth of six teams with a 1-8 record. Jo Walker, who was vice-captain, claimed eight wickets at 20 with a best of 4-4 against East Asia-Pacific. Lauren Newman did not have the return she would have hoped for with 49 runs at 6.12 while pace bowler Ashlyn Thompson, selected as a development player, took one wicket for 67.
