The construction of Chevron’s new Australian headquarters will finally begin next year after the $360 million development at Elizabeth Quay was approved by the Metropolitan Redevelopment Authority this week.

After years of stalling and delays by the energy giant, the 30-storey building has been locked in as another piece of the emerging quay skyline and ensures thousands of workers will come to the riverfront location every week day once it is completed.

With construction by Brookfield, the multi-use tower will have cafes, restaurants and retail spaces on the ground floor.

The lower floors will include a gym and childcare centre, and above those Chevron will have more than 52,000sqm of office space, including exhibition and conference facilities.

The approval was welcomed by Planning Minister Rita Saffioti and comes more than five years after Chevron bought the 6795sqm site on the corner of Barrack Street and The Esplanade for $64 million in 2013.

“The McGowan Government is committed to making Elizabeth Quay as self-sustainable as possible into the future — this development is a milestone,” Ms Saffioti said.

“Chevron’s new tower will be home to thousands of employees, benefiting small businesses throughout the city and offering lasting economic benefit to the State. Brookfield’s commitment to maximise local industry involvement is great news for the State.

“When construction begins, this development will create hundreds of on-site jobs, plus a major flow-on of work through local contracts.”

The MRA report said it considered the Chevron proposal “an innovative and unique” building.
