Sara Jade McCullock: Mum who horrifically killed baby son was off psychosis meds, judge-alone trial told

WARNING: DISTURBING CONTENT A young mother who was gripped by psychosis when she killed her 14-month-old boy inside their Madora Bay home is fighting a murder charge on insanity grounds. Police were confronted with a horrific scene when they arrived at the property in the early hours of April 27, 2022, after neighbours reported being woken by blaring music. They found Sara Jade McCullock cradling her bloodied, deceased son Jace, who had a snake lolly sticking out of his mouth that she’d tried to feed him. The 31-year-old claimed someone burst in and slammed him on the ground, prosecutor Ben Stanwix told her judge-alone Supreme Court of WA trial on Tuesday. But it was Ms McCullock who had inflicted “extreme violence” on the child, striking him repeatedly, face-first on the ground. Mr Stanwix said she had exhibited “strange and unpredictable” behaviour years earlier when she lived in the Northern Territory and given birth to him after a brief relationship. It turned violent on one occasion in June 2021, when she assaulted Jace’s father and his sister outside a pub, and she was hospitalised the next day as an involuntary patient after behaving oddly in public. She was diagnosed with schizophrenia during her month-long stay then moved to WA, where she lived with her sister and mother, and was seemingly a loving and devoted mum. But she stopped taking her antipsychotic medicine and started taking cannabis oil bought online months before the horrific killing, causing her mental health to decline, Mr Stanwix said. She began behaving bizarrely again — dancing in the street, laying on the ground with her child at McDonalds, randomly bringing a large toy dinosaur to someone’s home and gulping down an entire bottle of wine in a restaurant in one go. Her mother was deeply concerned and booked a GP appointment to get her a new prescription but Ms McCullock said she’d lost her Medicare card and rescheduled. Her sister then wanted to take her to hospital for the medication, but she said she was tired and going to bed. The tragedy unfolded hours later while her mother and sister weren’t there. Mr Stanwix said it was not in dispute that Ms McCullock killed her son and evidence pointed to her being in the grip of psychosis. Whether she intentionally caused herself to be intoxicated or stupefied with cannabis and whether she had intent to kill were live issues that Justice Amanda Forrester would determine, he said. Mr Stanwix said the State did not allege Ms McCullock was so affected at the time but was in the lead-up, which was one of the factors causing her relapse. He said she gave “considerable detail” of what happened one night at Frankland Centre, telling a nurse that “people were out to kill and torture” her son and “he was better off gone”. Defence counsel Sharon Auburn said her client “killed a person she loved the most in a savage, violent and horrific attack”. She was floridly psychotic and remained that way months later, Ms Auburn said. “Clearly, she was delusional,” the lawyer said. “She believed that she had to kill Jace to save him from monsters. “We know psychosis is evil. It comes and it goes ... there are moments of lucidity.” But her client was not intoxicated that night with cannabis, which had only been detected in a “minuscule amount” in her urine. She said Ms McCullock had been trying to self-medicate to calm herself down, which was not uncommon among people with her condition, who often avoided taking medication due to unpleasant side effects. Not taking her antipsychotics was the critical trigger to her relapse, Ms Auburn said. The trial continues.
