Albany’s much-loved senior choir risks disbanding if they don’t find a new conductor and a back-up pianist.

For three decades, The Sunset Singers have prepared four songs each month and performed concerts for Albany’s senior citizens with community singing, guest artists, an afternoon tea and a raffle.

With the recent departure of conductor and leader Jill Larsen and no back-up pianist, the group are in desperate need of new members who can fill these important roles.

Ruth Byrne is standing in as conductor but cannot commit to the role full-time and Maureen Kennedy is the group’s only pianist, leaving the singers stuck if she is unavailable.

Choir member John Locke said the group would be crushed if they had to disband.

“Our choir is a lovely bunch of friends who just love to sing together and entertain others,” Mr Locke said.

“There are no auditions to become a member and we sing popular songs in unison.

“Some members do not read music - we learn and sing from just word sheets.”

Every Monday afternoon, the 20 members meet at The Senior Chorus Centre on Grey Street behind the Town Hall to sing, socialise, and rehearse for their upcoming performances.
