Bridgerton fans may not have to wait that long for the next chapter with season four going into production this week.

Given the timing, the Netflix gods may bequeath us the new episodes by the end of 2025 although nothing has been confirmed.

The fourth season will centre on Benedict Bridgerton (Luke Thompson), the second eldest scion of the old money family whose Wisteria-covered mansion has seen many a romance bloom.

Benedict’s love interest will be Sophie, played by Australian actor Yerin Ha whose life is about to change irrevocably. Ha has appeared in the local series Bad Behaviour and Troppo as well as the international sci-fi show Halo. She is also in the upcoming Dune spin-off show Dune: Prophecy.

In author Julia Quinn’s book from which this season is drawn, Sophie’s story is based loosely on Cinderella.

She was born as the illegitimate child to an earl and his maid, and after her mother’s death, she was left with her father. Her father took her in as his ward but after he dies, she’s mistreated by her stepmother and step-sisters.

She attends the Bridgerton ball in borrowed clothes, and catches Benedict’s eye but disappears into the night leaving nothing more than an impression as the mysterious “silver lady”.

Bridgerton released a series of new images featuring Ha and Thompson on the backlot at Shepperton Studio where cameras are rolling.

It also announced new cast members joining the ensemble including Scottish actor Katie Leung, who will play Araminta, the stepmother.

Harry Potter fans will remember Leung as the boy wizard’s love interest, Cho Chang. Leung wasn’t given much to do in the four films in which the character appeared, but will hopefully have more drama to play in Bridgerton.

The two stepsisters will be portrayed by Michelle Mao as Rosamund and Isabella Wei as Posy. Rosamund is being set up as a rival to Sophie with Netflix’s official description pegging her as “beautiful, vain and eager to please her mother” and dead-set on wooing Benedict for herself.

Bridgerton is one of Netflix’s biggest hits, drawing big audiences. The first season of the show remains the fourth most-watched original on the platform, clocking up 113 million views in the first 91 days after release. The second season is number 10 on the list while season three is sixth.

The most recent season was released in May and was centred on the romance between Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan) and Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton).
